Data Guard in Oracle Database 10g Release 2 introduces the new Fast-Start Failover feature that allows Data Guard to automatically fail over to a previously chosen and transactionally-consistent standby database in the event of the loss of the primary database due to database, storage, network or system failure. Fast-start failover quickly and reliably fails over the chosen target standby database to the primary database role, without requiring any manual steps to invoke the failover. Fast-Start Failover will also bring the original Primary database back as a standby automatically when the failure is corrected if possible. This paper drills down into how this is accomplished, from database to client, in a completely automated fashion.
